Victoria Day Trip From Vancouver

Two things separate a cheap crossing from an expensive one, and neither is obvious from the price you first see. The first is whether you bring a car. A foot passenger returning the same day pays 2 x CA$21.00, which is CA$42.00. A driver with a standard vehicle pays 2 x CA$110.00, which is CA$220.00, because the vehicle fare of CA$89.00 is charged on top of the driver's own passenger fare in each direction. On a day trip where you will not use the car for six hours, that is the most expensive parking in British Columbia.

The second is the Saver fare. BC Ferries publishes a discounted advance tariff at CA$15.00 for an adult and between CA$34.00 and CA$84.00 for a standard vehicle, which is where the vehicle math stops being absurd if you can commit to a sailing. On top of every net fare there is a 5 percent fuel surcharge applied at payment, so treat the published numbers as a floor.

Foot passengers never need to book, and that is the whole advantage

Walk-on capacity is not the constraint on this route; car deck space is. That single asymmetry is why the independent version of this day is genuinely relaxed: you turn up, you buy, you sail. A driver who has not reserved is gambling on space and may sit out a sailing, which on an hourly timetable costs an hour.

One fare on the index is not for you: BC residents aged 65 and over travel free as foot passengers Monday to Thursday outside statutory holidays, with documentation. It is a residents' programme, not a visitor discount, and the accessible fare of CA$10.50 for a passenger and attendant also requires documentation. A group of ten or more travelling prepaid or on Saver pays CA$17.95 each.

The buses at each end, and what nobody publishes

Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay are both outside their cities. From the Vancouver side the terminal is served by TransLink, and at worst that is a 3-zone adult fare of $4.85 (CA$6.70) on contactless or $3.91 (CA$5.40) on Compass stored value, dropping to a single 1-zone fare of $2.54 (CA$3.50) after 6:30 p.m. on a weekday and all day at weekends. The rules behind that are on getting around Vancouver.

On the Victoria side, BC Transit runs the connection and we could not read a route number or a fare for the bus from Swartz Bay or downtown Victoria out to Butchart Gardens on any official page in this research. That gap is why the combined coach product and the guided runs with garden admission exist, and why we do not quote you a total for the fully independent version of the garden trip.

There is CA$17 between the cheapest month and the dearest for the same walk around the same gardens, and the cheapest is not the worst. November at CA$28.60 is a real bargain in a shoulder month, with the catch that the Gardens close at 3:30 p.m. and you are visiting in the shortest daylight of the year. Summer buys you the opposite: Wednesday to Sunday the Gardens stay open until 10 p.m., which is the only band where a garden visit and a full day in Victoria both fit.

The Gardens also state something most attractions bury: "We do not offer seniors or student discounts." That is their own wording and it is unusually direct. Children 5 to 12 pay between CA$3 and CA$5 depending on the band, and the rates page does not state a policy for under-5s at all.

The two closures worth writing down

December 25 and January 18 to 31. The second one is the trap: a fortnight in the deepest part of the low season when a visitor who has checked nothing but the price finds the gates shut. It is also the only stretch of the year when the Gardens are closed at all, which means every other date works if the weather does.

Penelope from Australia, five stars on the thirteen-hour Gulf Islands and gardens run: "It was a most enjoyable day with the highlight being the Butchart Gardens. Our guide Senan was brilliant and he provided very knowledgeable commentary along the way." That is the common verdict on these tours: the gardens carry the day, and the city is the part people say they wanted longer in.

Every version of this day is about thirteen hours except the one that flies. What changes is how much of it you spend in Victoria rather than on the way to Victoria, and that is the number to compare, not the price.

Where the guided days actually put you

The published itineraries are more specific than the marketing. The Gulf Islands and gardens run lists 45 minutes of Vancouver sightseeing, the 95-minute ferry, a 20-minute guided pass through Victoria, two hours at Butchart, a 30-minute coach and 90 minutes of free time downtown. The Westcoast Sightseeing version states its split up front as two hours at the gardens and two and a half in the city. The Star Sightseeing run reverses the order, giving two hours downtown before two at the gardens, and is the only one with both a driver and a dedicated step-on guide.

If the city is what you came for, the Landsea version front-loads it with three free hours downtown. If the gardens are what you came for, any of them works and the cheapest one wins.

Take a thirteen-hour guided day. Roughly seven of those hours are transport: an hour of pickups and coach at the Vancouver end, 1 hour 35 minutes of sailing each way, half an hour between Swartz Bay and the city, and the same again on the return. That leaves between three and a half and five hours on Vancouver Island, and a guided run spends two of them at Butchart Gardens, 30 minutes north of the city.

So: if you want Butchart Gardens and a look at the Inner Harbour, the day works, and it works well. Every review pattern on the tours we read says the gardens are the part people remember. If you want the Royal BC Museum as well, it does not: the museum recommends two to four hours for its own galleries, and there is no version of the coach day that gives you both the gardens and a museum afternoon.

The honest split is this. One thing plus a walk: day trip. Two things: stay the night, and the three-day Vancouver plan shows what you would be giving up in the city to do it. The seaplane is the only product that buys the extra hours back, and at $529.35 it is buying them at roughly $70 an hour.

What you can see in the hours you do have

The Inner Harbour is the compact part of Victoria and everything a day visitor is likely to want sits around it: the Parliament Buildings, the Empress, the causeway and the harbour itself, all within a few minutes on foot of where the through coach drops you at Capital City Station.

The Royal BC Museum is the one paid indoor option worth pricing before you go. Single-visit admission read from rbcm.ca in Q3 2026 is $23.20 (CA$32) adult, $15.94 (CA$22) senior and youth 6 to 18, $13.76 (CA$19) student, free for children 5 and under and free for Indigenous Peoples at the admission desk. It opens 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and closes only on December 25 and January 1, and its own advice is to allow two to four hours.
