Flyover Canada, Now Flyover In Vancouver

The attraction opened on 29 June 2013 as FlyOver Canada, built into a former IMAX theatre at Canada Place by two Vancouver entrepreneurs, Stephen Geddes and Andrew Strang, with financing from Aquilini Developments under the name Soaring Attractions. It cost $16 million and was the largest new tourist attraction to open in the region at the time. The model was Disney's Soarin' Over California, and the format has since been exported to Minnesota, Iceland, Chicago and Las Vegas.

In December 2016 Soaring Attractions sold the business to Pursuit, the Phoenix-based attractions arm of Viad Corp, which owns the chain today. The rebrand from FlyOver Canada to Flyover in Vancouver follows from that: the chain is now Flyover, and each location takes its city's name. The practical evidence is in the redirect. That matters more than a branding note usually would, because a lot of what is written about this attraction describes the original film, which was called FlyOver Canada and is not the signature experience any more. If a review mentions flying over the Rockies and then the Prairies in one continuous eight-minute piece, it may be describing a film that is no longer the one you will see.

The two films showing now

Awaken Canada is the signature experience and runs year-round. Call of the Canadian Rockies is published as showing "for a limited time only", so it is the one to check before you build a visit around it. Seasonal features appear under their own names in the winter months.

If you want both films in one visit, the Double Feature deal takes 50 per cent off the second, and the operator recommends allowing about 90 minutes for the pair.

You are held in a lobby, then taken into a pre-show that runs 6 to 8 minutes and introduces the people and places in the film. The pre-show is standing, and this is the part visitors from outside Canada most often find long: the reviews on the platform card include a New Zealand rider who called the introduction long and the flight itself brilliant, which is a fair summary of the format.

After the pre-show comes a short safety briefing, then the ride. You sit in a row with a lap belt, the row lifts and moves forward into the sphere, and your feet hang free. The flight lasts 8 to 10 minutes, with wind, mist, scent and motion cued to the footage. Then the row retracts, you walk out past the shop, and the whole thing has taken 25 to 30 minutes.

Two physical details are worth knowing before you buy. The seats are about 53 cm wide and the belts extend to 157 cm, with no published weight limit. And there is standing and there are stairs at points in the route, though an elevator reaches every part of the experience.

The variable is not the ride, which is fixed, it is what you attach to it. The building it sits in is free and worth an hour on its own, and the two other ticketed attractions on this stretch of waterfront are within ten minutes on foot, so the flight can be 40 minutes or the anchor of a half day.

The height minimum is 102 cm, which is 40 inches, and it is absolute: a child under it cannot ride, and there is no seated alternative for them. Children aged 13 and under must be with an adult or guardian aged 14 or over. That single rule decides more family visits than the price does, so measure before you book rather than at the door.

The operator publishes a clear list of people who should not ride: anyone with a fear of heights or a tendency to motion sickness, heart conditions, chronic back or neck pain, expectant mothers and anyone with photosensitive epilepsy. The motion is real, the seats swing forward into the sphere, and the visual field is deliberately overwhelming. If you know that a simulator makes you queasy, this is a simulator.

Accessibility is better than the format suggests. Every part of the experience is reachable by elevator, and a wheelchair user who can transfer to the seat independently or with a companion rides normally; anyone who cannot experiences it from a stationary platform with a team member. A companion's ticket is free when a paying guest requests assistance, and that has to be arranged by phone because the wheelchair spaces per showtime are limited. Closed captions exist for the pre-show only, in English and French, on your own device: the operator states plainly that the flight itself has no captions.

The address is 201-999 Canada Place, on the north end of the pier under the five white sails. Waterfront Station is a five-minute walk, which puts the Expo Line, the Canada Line, the SeaBus and the West Coast Express at the door; from the airport that is a single ride with no change, and the YVR to downtown page has the fare and the AddFare that applies leaving the airport. Buses, and every SkyTrain trip after 6:30pm on a weekday or at any hour at the weekend, are a one-zone fare, which is set out on the getting around page.

Driving, the nearest parking is the Convention Centre East Parkade at 999 Canada Place, with accessible spaces near the elevator: Level A for tickets, Level M for the experience. The operator asks drivers to allow 30 to 45 minutes before their showtime rather than the 15 it asks of everyone else, which is a fair warning on a cruise day.

And cruise days are the thing to plan around. Canada Place is the Alaska homeport, with nearly 360 calls and more than 1.4 million passengers expected in the 2026 season, so the building can hold several thousand people with luggage on a turnaround morning. Put it first, early, and let the free things follow. A 10am showtime puts you back on the promenade before 11, in time for the Heritage Horns sounding the first four notes of the anthem at noon, with the Canadian Trail and the Parks Canada exhibits in between and none of it costing anything. Walk east afterwards and Gastown is ten minutes away for lunch.

On a wet day this is one of three indoor anchors on the same stretch of downtown, with the Lookout eight minutes away and the aquarium a short bus ride into Stanley Park; the rainy day page sequences the three. On a cruise embarkation day it is the best use of a spare morning in the city, because it is directly above the terminal and takes less than an hour.
